Part 7 Hobart, Freycinet Nat Park

It’s Saturday and the Salamanca markets are in full swing. Vibrant and very busy.

On  the way to Mt Wellington dropped into the old Hobart penitentiary for a hour tour.

Hobart down below, Port Arthur peninsula in the centre distance, and Bruny Island in the distance far right - perfect day.

The drive to the top at 1100m was not quite like Tibet but it did bring back memories.

Dinner was at the Londley Pub where you can also free camp

Sunday 20th March 2022

Hunted for low price fuel !! , best we could do was $2.25 , most were $2.39.

Booked and visited the MONA art gallery...different

Built mostly underground the walls are the natural sandstone - cracks and water leaks and all.

This was one piece of art.

Controlled water drops that spelt words as they dripped down nylon lines.

Also very up to date with Ukraine being the topic of the time.

You can book a seat at this table put on a set of ear muffs that blocks out all sound, be silent and then proceed to separate rice and lentil seeds and count them. Thousands of them.

Something to do with slowing down humanity,

it’s not for me

A actual Porsche that needs to go on a diet.

Represents obesity in humanity and how it would look in a once beautiful inanimate object.

The first ever bridge in Australia was built in Richmond in 1825 - after a 17 month build

Built by convict labour to enable reliable transport between the east coast and Port Arthur

Early engineering triumph despite the obvious wobble in the middle due to sagging, it still carries semi-trailers some 200 years later.

We are now taking a rough track towards Coles Bay

Monday 21st March 2022

Well that track petered out with far too much scrub closing in so a more tourist route via Oatlands, Ross and Campbell Town

In the now Oatlands, John Vincent established the Callington Mill in 1837 to grind flour

John was a questionable character and as arrested 11 times in 12 months and many believe his wealth was more to do with the sly whisky trade than the grinding flour.

The mill has now been totally rebuilt and works. next door a legal whisky operation - closed when we visited.

Another old convict bridge in Ross built in 1836.

Also in Ross the old Convict Female Factory -

In Ross there is a cross road where a decision needs to be made...

The Four Corners of Ross potentially leading your soul in one of four directions.

They say it is best to keep to 2026, we will be lucky if it gets to next week !

Following  a serving of seafood Chowder and a plate of garlic & buttered Mussels we are off down a 4x4 track to a remote camp ground on the Freycinet Peninsula  - The eastern end of the Friendly Beach reserve.

The view from the turn around point is GREAT, but the camp was back in the scrub.

Wednesday 23rd March 2022

Our morning walk starts with down the beach and back.

Crystal clear green/blue waters but nothing interesting on the beach - no shells, driftwood etc

But the scenery is just beautiful

Drove and walked the walk to the Cape Tourville Lighthouse, also booked a boat trip to Wineglass Bay tomorrow

Wild Camp No 43 - Up behind Coles Bay near their water reserve.

Thursday 24th March 2022

We hit the jackpot as to weather, calm seas and wildlife.

We took a cruise to Wineglass bay and even the crew were commenting on one of the best days out...

Pink Granite cliffs - stained with different coloured algae.

This outcrop with a waterfall

The crew spotted birds feeding on a school of fish so went to investigate.

Then the dolphins followed us.

Around the ‘Nuggets’ rocks below the Cape Tourville lighthouse, Australian fur seals were lazing in the sun.

Wineglass bay, where we parked up for lunch

As we head back to Coles Bay a couple of late season Humpback whales heading south.

Free Camp No 44 -

Tomorrow we walk the 11Kms circuit track to Wineglass Bay.

Friday 25th March 2022

Yet another perfect weather day for our walk to Wineglass Bay

The water is perfectly clear, and the waves just quietly lapped in.

BUT, it’s COLD though.

It is just so beautiful be both had to have a splash regardless of the chill factor.

On the return hike rather than do the 1,000 steps back we elected to do the circuit via Hazard Beach.

All along the beach were dead Spider Crabs. I did some goggling but to no avail why .

The return is a bit challenging but the occasional views are beautiful.

23,000 steps - 14.5 Kms and 66 flights of steps.

So we shouted ourselves another dinner out of Seafood Chowder.

Then searched for a camp site.
