GPS Nor Nor West to Geosurveys Hill

I am constantly surprised that all the way out here you can have the comforts of home.
Hot shower, big bed and cold drinks
It is still 43kms cross country to Geosurveys Hill so at least another 5 hours travelling.

Geosurveys Hill is a lonely rocky outcrop surrounded by hundreds of kilometres of red sand dunes.
First discovered by air reconnaissance then visited by Reg Sprigg in a Land Rover back in 1962.

Here we are again on the 2nd November 2017.

21 years ago we stood in the same spot when I lead the ‘Thunderbirds Capricorn Line Expedition’ to this spot. We then headed further NNW to Altunga then back across the Desert following the Tropic of Capricorn into Queensland.
Even managed to find the entry in the very brittle log book.

In Global Xplorer we have travelled 391kms from Birdsville to Geosurveys Hill, our fuel usage averaged at 22.21Lt/100Kms.
Very good considering the hard dune and heavy sand driving

There are no roads or tracks in this area and access is by GPS only.
Some old geosurvey shot lines and other desert travellers previous tracks make the going some what easier and using these tracks also preserves the delicate ecosystem.
One cannot underestimate the isolation and how harsh this country is and can be on vehicles.

As such it is important to have support.
John Stewart and Elizabeth Burns at such short notice provided such support, and I thank then sincerely for that. John also drove a Fuso Canter 4x4 fitted with our 37” Super Singles.
