GPS Nor Nor West to the Centre of the Desert

Thursday, 2 November 2017 8:22 am

The track ends at an old NT Water Resource’s Drill Hole No 13388.

From here we follow a GPS bearing to a point marked on some maps as the Geographical Centre of the Simpson Desert.

That is about 80kms away in a NNW direction.

We only saw a couple of camels and they were very timid.

As we loosely follow the bearing we cross the sand dune valleys and look ahead all the time for the
best line across the next dune.

Some dunes we record at between 20 and 25 metres..

Some require a zig zag approach, slowly climbing higher but avoiding any side slopes.

We come across these strange formations.

Limestone !

Way back this was a sea floor with coral reefs. The formations remind us of coral bombes.

The sand is soft and should we not make it it is impossible to re-run the same path.

Fortunately in all the 260 dunes out and back we only had to try a second time less than 8 times.

I think that is a real testament to the correct tyre choice and running pressure

The Simpson is vast !

Long dunes running hundreds of kilometres across the landscape.

The distance on the GPS very slowly decreases.

We are driving is 2nd high and averaging only 10KPH across the dune valleys and less as we pick our way up the and down the dunes.

Sand moguls.

On the western side of the dunes it is very rough. 1st High is the go.

The truck rocks and rolls and the springs groan.

Everything gets a thorough workout and test

Even us as the outside temperature hovers around 38*C

Camel bones !

One mistake and help is a long way away.

As for vehicle recovery forget it !

In places the size of the vehicle is diminished in front of the dune wave.

Finally the Centre of the Desert.

It is marked by a tower encrusted with memorabilia from other intrepid desert travellers.

Mostly hard core 4x4 clubs.
