Birdsville to Poepples Corner to GPS Turn

Monday, 30 October 2017 8:22 am

45kms west of Birdsville is BIG RED, a massive 35m high sand dune.

The on road travelling pressure of our 37x12.5 R17 Super Single Tyres  45 PSI Black Top and 35 PSI gravel roads.

Considering the full load the tyres are lowered all round down to 26 PSI hot or 22 PSI cold

Well that was a complete anticlimax !

2nd High and did not even notice it was there.

We will have to find a more difficult BIGGER BIG RED on the way back, when we have spare fuel to have a play.

The foot print even at these higher pressures for sand is massive.

The QAA and French Line is easy  !

2nd High and 10-12KPH over the higher dunes. ( 1200 to 1500RPM )

3rd High and 17-20KPH along the track and over the smaller dunes.

No wheel spin. No backing up for more speed, no axle jumping, just a slow drive up and over.

Desert Camp 1 was just a drive up a dune valley, 80kms from Birdsville.

Outside shaded temperature at 6pm was 40*C, fortunately it was cool travelling in the air conditioning of the truck cabin.

Bush flies were bad, very bad, so it was great to retreat into the camper with all the fly screened windows  and door open and the Fiamma in-roof fan blowing.

Monday 30th October 2017:

A strong wind developed overnight and the temperature dropped.

A dot in the desert marks the confluence of Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Our average speed is 20 KPH.

With the right vehicle set up the QAA and French Line track is as easy as a drive to the local shopping centre !

28kms past Poeppel’s Corner we turn right onto a faint track.

The track meanders north to a series of large salt lakes.

This Dingo shows us the way.

No water out here so we wonder what they are drinking ?

Desert Camp 3 - Salt Lake Camp ( Lake Mirranponga Pongunna )

148Kms from Birdsville

All good and going well, tomorrow the real challenge starts.
