Week 6 - 1st - 7th September 2024

We unload the side-b-side and head down the beach - it’s 15kms to the mouth of one of the Mitchell river’s outlets.

The dry sand was soft and the wet sand near the water that is usually hard not so, it tries to suck you in.

Even for the buggy it was hard work so we know there is a track about 5kms inland so we follow some new tracks over the burnt country and do a 45kms loop back to our camp.

Dinner -Cajun Barramundi and Herbed Rice
-
B.Good !

Off to the next remote spot.
Down past the Mitchell River to Surprise Creek.

We hit the timber country around the river system.
Nothing like a bit of track clearing.
Then they are here again - Johno and the guys from ‘Exploring the off the Grid’
Where they go with the tracked vehicle and side by sides & sleep under canvas,
we travel in our dust free Global Xplorer - shower, personal toilet, cooking, double bed.

Sunset at camp on the Surprise Creek.

Great place.
After 15 catfish I gave up on fishing so attended to this blog !
Our Freezer is full with frozen meat and Barra fillets - so really do not need more.
We have are food enough for a month.

The Mitchell River crossing between Kowanyama and Prompuraaw. We tried to cross here some 25 years ago and it was in flood, and had to divert.
We are travelling alone so a bit apprehensive about what we cannot see or check out - Why? Crocks and Bull Nose Sharks are in these waters !
Apologies for Lyns reaction - we fell into a rather BIG hole - all good though

Prompuraaw, is a indigenous community on the western side of cape York of some 600 people.
A VERY much cleaner and organised town than Kowanyama

Heading east to Musgrave on the PDR and more Burning of Country

So many abandoned and wrecked cars in these areas.

Our camp is just off the road in a water filled gravel pit - on arrival we disturbed about 20+ wild pigs.

Musgrave an old telegraph station -

Musgrave- been here a few times . first in 1991, then 92,97,2003,05,09,2011, 15 & 19, just do not want to remember it like this.
Gone is the single lane dirt track and replaced with the wide bitumen road; the big Fig Tree gone with the grave below, all very commercial.
The historic pictures in the eating area replaced with sales brochures of tours and fisting trips .
