Week 5 -23rd - 31st - August 2024

Just North of Camooweal is another cave - not so well marked but you can walk down into it.

Crossing the still ‘ slightly’ flooded Gregory River.

Riversleigh Fossil Reserve.

Yes a World Heritage area and I love this type of thing but the sign compares it with the pyramids of Egypt is pushing it a bit.

The best fossil - this big bird - like an overgrown Emu.

Note the small pebbles  -0 its stomach contents and the hollow bones.

Exploring a remote track we find the head stone of Sam & Opal Ah Bow, it reads:

“If you seek their monument look all about you for they loved this country well”

Artesian bore - Bourketown

Camp at Leichhardt River falls

Driving on to Normington I pass this on the road - quick blink and its a crashed Starship.

Burke & Will camp 119.

Their most northerly camp before returning sough on their ill fated journey.

In Normanton even the crocodiles are bigger than a GX !

Sunset - Kurumba Point.

Great meal at the Sunset pub

A morning out fishing and Lyn’s Blue Salmon

This was a bit of a surprise.

On  the road Normanton to Chillagoe  - its The Savanna Way - publicised as a tourist route.

No camping for some 400+ kms - no rest areas either.

Our latest nights travel to 7pm in the dark. We turned off to Kowanyama and 20kms up the road into just a pull off - all night is that
car going to stop ??

All was good.

A long corrugated and bull dust road - actually a great drive

The Kowanyama information centre.

Toilets - worse than the worse China ones we can across.

Information ZERO.

Broken Cars and trash.

I am sure they can do better.

Starlink is great - we logged in to get permission and pay ($33 each/night) to camp out on the western coast.

Its a sandy and tight bush track that required the use of the chain saw on more than a few occasions.

Our camp is right on the estuarine river.

Tposy River.

Cat fish = too many  Flathead for breakfast

The 8 guys at the next can have already their quota of barramundi of 5 each ie 40 fish so this mornings catch they offered to us.

A Big thank you

Now filleted and enough for 3 meals

Topsy camp No4.

I think we will stay another couple of days.

Here is where we are:
