The Tsunami Coast

Tuesday, 20 June 2023 4:29 am

You have all seen the shocking videos but this is what you see on the ground now….And then there is the Fukushima power plant we get almost illegally close!

Like any coastal town it hugs the beauty of the beach.

On the 11th. March 2011 Japan was struck by the largest earthquake in its history. An undersea megathrust earthquake centred off the coast of Japan.

A warning was sent to Japan in 3 minutes.

Less than 40 minutes later the Tsunami struck a 100 km of coastline. The wave itself was anywhere between 9 and 15 meters high!! It engulfed buildings and people in the blink of an eye. 19500 people lost their lives.

Homes and cars were washed away.

When hit by a fast moving wall of water moving at 30+kph there is little one can do.

Unlike the movie it’s not a breaking wave more like a fast moving incoming tide.

Just one thing I did not comprehend with all the news stories- it was ZERO degrees at the time

All along this coast are a number of levels of defenses

1. Concrete blocks of irregular shapes

2. The 4-8m concrete wall, some even with a curved top

  1. 3.A depression where there is a ‘beach road’

4. What I am standing on is a 6-8m long ‘hill’ that is densely planted with cypress trees

5. What used to be houses is now farm land.

6. The main North/ South arterial road built up on yet another long ‘hill’

Behind that is now the town

This is one of the many schools what was hit.

The earthquake was 27 kilometres deep and 200kms off the coast.

It registered 9 on the scale and one of the largest recorded.

Within 3 minutes a warning was issued- you have 40 minutes to evacuate before the tsunamis hits!

This school was to far from
high ground so the students and all went to the top floor.

The force coming in is as much as it is when it is receding.

All 90 students, teachers and parents crawled into the school attic and survived.

The blue marker high on the second floor indicates the water level.

Hard to comprehend…

The school is 1/2 kilometre from the oceanfront.

“Tsunami Tendenko”, it comes from the elderly who
had in past generations passed this lesson down.

It had been taught in schools for 3 years pre 2011, and saved many lives.

In brief it means ‘individually save yourself’, don’t rely on your parents etc to come and get you, and even harder for the parents, save yourself before going to find your children.

With school and family discussions all know where to go without looking for others.

It saved many lives.

The Fukushima Daishi Nuclear Power Plant at the waters edge was also hit by the tsunami and within days the reactors began to over heat and explosions occurred over the next few days.

An evacuation order was issued for everyone in a 10 km radius of the plant.

The next day it was reissued for a 30 km radius.

They now had a nuclear disaster on their hands.

We tried a number of roads to get a close picture of the actual plant but it’s well locked off.

People in the evacuation zones packed some belongings got in the cars and started heading to where they were told.

This caused a massive traffic jam.

And little did they know they would not start returning for almost 12 years.

The landscape has changed completely.

In this large exclusion zone, there are empty shops, houses , and businesses.

They are ghost towns. There are no schools, hospitals or infrastructure.

It is only in the last year people are coming back for a look at their houses and deciding whether to stay

This is a storage yard full of cars, trucks and machinery that is radioactive.

Note the trees etc.

They have actually raked the Forrest floor and taken away leaves and fallen timber, it’s all stored

There are thousands of black bags of top soil stored in many holding years like this.

Radioactive soil was stripped from all surrounding areas, some stored other buried deep in what looks like green soccer fields/ but they hide a daemon below.

The government has an obligation in 2045 to remove all this waste soil, vehicle etc.

But nobody knows where or how

Some buildings are completely covered.

The half life of the radioactive materials will be in 2045

Rice fields that can no longer grow rice now grow electricity, now vast solar panels span the horizon
