Kita Village was designated as a Heritage Site in 1993 as it reflects the original Kitayama style straw roof farmhouses. Most of them are 150 to 200 years old. The locals works co-operatively to preserve the village and surrounding farms as a unit.

The straw roof used to be replaced every 50+ years but with modern gas cookers the smoke from the old wood fires is not there to preserve the straw.

Replacement now is 20 to 25 years.

Not in the Kita village but we follow lesser roads and find also this house.

Some great mountain roads through Sasari and Hanase Mountain pass each up and down from 400m to 750m

I have a love and hate with Bamboo.

At home it took me 7 years to finally rid the garden of some bamboo I planted because it would be ‘Nice’

Here in the Bamboo Garden near Ninna-ji its at its most beautiful, and it can propagate at its free will.

Camp 28 - Truck stop on Expressway No E1A as we head back to Kobe

Friday/Saturday/Sunday  19/20/21st May 2023

We fly to Vietnam on Saturday for 5 days - why in the middle of a Japan overlanding trip ?

Because we wish to spend 4 months in Japan, yet the visa system only allows 90 days, however if you leave and return the 90 days starts again.

So we have to sit on a beach in Southern Vietnam and drink (according to Lyn) Pina Coladas for 5 days.

Well that was the plan until we got to the airline checkin and our travel agent stuffed up the bookings %$#@$#$! . Change of plans we jumped a flight to Seoul/South Korea returning Monday.
