EU Part 4 Norway 3 The Top End

Thursday, 4 April 2019 3:26 pm

We awake to BLUE SKY and a warm +3*C

All of a sudden we feel our holiday has started, if only we could visit all those coastal areas now !

Just beautiful.

OK we have arrived at the town of Nordkjosbotn where the wholesaler of the snow chains resides.

The deal is done - not cheap but not only do we perhaps need, but actually it is a legal necessary for any vehicle over 3,500kgs to carry chains in winter. Minimum is 3 chains, 2 for the rear and at least one steer chain.

  1. 1. There is an inside and outside, check.

  2. 2. Throw the chain over the tyre
    and drive forward
  3. 3.  Push the top half of the chain towards the centre of the tyre so it is more loose on the inside.

  1. 4. Latch the inside and then pull the chain back over the outside of the tyre

  1. 5. Latch the outside, using the leaver link to pull the chain tight

  1. 6. This is how it finished up.

  1. 7. Drive forward and back a few metres then readjust to tighten.

Now time to discuss trucks !

Thew road is good and the snow plows are still busy.

All day we are following the edges of the Fjords and the Atlantic ocean.

Its a great drive.

The end of the day and the clouds have rolled in.

Down the other side and into the last Fjord valley that we follow north.

The Nordkapp tunnel.

Snow Sculptures

Things change so quickly.

Where did the road go ?

Climb the next mountain and its all
clear again.

The last 10kms and the road is closed !  Bugger. ...

OK  now read the sign.

Every day in winter a convoy of vehicles at 11 and 12 noon follows a snow plough to Nordkapp, returning 2 hours later.

Friday 5th April 2019:

11pm and a small touch of the Aurora.

YEAH !

Last night was particularly cold AND windy - so we find this morning that our water tanks have frozen !

10.30 am and we are lined up at the gate waiting for the snow plow to arrive to escort us and some other travellers the last 13kms to North Cape ( Nordkapp)

With chains fitted it was a much safer drive up the hills and significantly more for coming down the hills.

Nearly all the way it was snow and ice covered.

It’s quite a tourist mecca, so the staff are heading up there by snowmobile to sell us all kinds of things with Norway and North Cape printed on it .

Later in the day 4 busses from the cruise ships will be also arriving.

Our selfie at North Cape

...and one for the truck

And for the Grand Kids a Snow Angle

So we now turn south and head towards Lapland. (The most northern part of Finland )

Saturday 6th April 2019:

Last night the heavens put on a display.

We waited until the sun set at 11pm then out into the cold air.

Stayed about an hour until the cold drove us inside.

Then something quite unusual.

4 very bright white lights suddenly appeared, and then started to turn blue and as they grew they faded in intensity.

Around a minute later, 4 more appeared in the exact same rhombus shape. This happened 3 times.

The process repeated itself to the right 3 more times.

By chance a car drove past lighting the snow covered mountain.

?????> Can not find reference to such an event in Google. ???? !!

Very strange ????

Ok next day.

Heading south
