61E Ethiopia - Danakil Depression Part 2

With all that tectonic movement significant heat is generated from within the earths crust.

Superheated water, steam and gases from the deep are forced upwards through the layers of salt creating a very alien landscape.

Sulphuric acid pools, crystalline sulphur, iron oxide and other minerals.

We are very close to Eritrea so  security is paramount.

Dallol is 116m below sea level and one of the most remote places on the planet. The average daily temperature is 35*C and for us the day was 46*C with a hot wind !

I walked away from the ususl area and found Fumarols, or Hydrothermal vents.

I have seen these in pictures from the deep Pacific and Atlantic where the same tectonic movement are taking place, but here in Dallol they are just as fine a structure on land.

You can hear the gasses rush from them.

More strange shapes.

Note the 2 security guards sitting on the hill !

The Afar live simply and houses made of timber scrounged from the dry landscape.  Cover that with plastic and it’s called home.

Children's toys are just as simple.

We even saw a similar set up using just a pumpkin with a hole as a wheel !

YES !

This was our camp site with mattresses placed on a bunk frame.

Toilet was, well you just walk down the road !
