Friday, 21 April 2017 11:27 pm

We have always been told the traffic in Dar es Salaam was horrendous  and is was.

Here is one street near a ferry and our eventual camp site.

The vehicles on the right are parked and we have to drive down what is left of the road !

The guys here at Kipepeo also arrange for our flights over to Zanzibar and taxi to airport and pickup.

All very helpful !

Coral islands on the way over..

Rusty Tin Roofs of Zanzibar.

The old part of Zanzibar is known as Stone Town, as the original Portuguese then Arab and then English buildings are built from coral stone.

Most buildings some with beautiful timber balconies, line very narrow streets.

We walked many of the streets that day and into the evening.

Lunch was some fajitas cooked right here !

And Dinner  is what they call Zanzibar Pizzas.

Rolled out pasta dough filled with chicken mince, vegetables, egg, mayo, spices, and chilly.

This was then fried on both sides

We were very happy with our accommodation found through Booking.com

T190: Hiliki Guest House

Cost:US$78/night with private bathroom & good b’fast......

All Very Nice

Owned & managed by Adoud.

Monday 17th April 2017:

A quick walk this morning around the 16C Portuguese fort.

Then a tour of a spice farm.

Our guide shows how to use the paste from the lipstick plant.

MMMM !!!

It was then off to Paji Beach for 3 nights.

A holiday within a holiday.

This is just what we did for the 3 days...nothing !

No kilometres travelled,

3 course meals, 3 times a day ( all included)

Even a TV, first for 2 months.

All very nice

Thursday 20th April 2017

A quick flight back to Dar, collect the truck and across town to visit Jon and Jude.

This lovely couple we met 5 years ago when they were planning their drive from OZ to the UK. They now reside here and it was a very talkative time catching up over the two days.

T194/5: Jon & Jude’s  House

Thanks to you both for your exemplary hospitality.

Saturday 22nd April 2017:

Around 60kms north of Dar es-Salaam is the old slave port of Bagamoyo. It is from there the poor souls were shipped over to Zanzibar.

It was on Joh & Jude’s recommendation that we visited the Amani Forrest Reserve, north of Muheza.

We came here for these strange looking Chameleons.

Following dinner we went Chameleon spotting with torches. Found about 6 in the hour.

T196: Emau Hill Forrest Camp

Cost:US$15/night  9/10   Great !

Managed by Karl & Gail

Today: 368 Kms

Africa Total: 36,210 Kms

Altitude: A cool 1076 Metres

Sunday 23rd April 2017:

Walked through the impressive rainforest again today just to admire the trees, flowers, and epiphytes.

Had a long chat with Karl who also gave us some valuable traveling contacts for our time in Tanzania and Ethiopia.

It is not very clear but on the way out we spot a Black and White Colobus Monkey.

On Karl’s recommendation we are heading to the Mambo View Point to camp and the World View Point that looks out towards Mt Kilimanjaro

It is an isolated and winding 80km dirt track after the bitumen stops at Lushoto.

But a great drive.

Lots of waving and jumping children and after you wave so do the adults wave and return a big smile.

BUT they do not like the camera !

The villages are built along the ridge lines and the road either cuts the edge of the 1500m escarpment or wriggles in and out of the valleys.

T197: Mambo View Point Camp

Cost:  US$10/night   9/10   Great !

Managed by Herman

Today: 222 Kms ( 8 hours ! )

Africa Total: 36,433 Kms

Altitude: A more cool 1898 Metres

Out there ‘somewhere’ hidden in cloud is Mt Kilimanjaro.

The mambo View Point Camp was actually closed so very pleased Herman allowed us to stay.

Spectacular view, just shame the clouds did not behave for us !
