Adventure 3.3 Eastern Beach Run

Wednesday, 15 July 2015 7:32 pm

Day 5 and all is good.

We head further south to Double Mouth and the Red Cliffs of Shelburne Bay.

Crossing Double Mouth approx 10kms south of Capt Billy’s to camp on the Southern side.

Being on the southern side means at high tide tomorrow morning we can continue to move south with the then 3 metre river crossing behind us.

Another washed up boat.

Camp 5 amongst the dunes behind Double Mouth.

Next morning Lyn & I head to the river for a spot of fishing, I catch a small mackerel (?) and Lyn nothing.

Lyn says “This lure does not work, I have caught nothing on it so far and now I am snagged”

Well snagged she was !

I pulled to the right and then the left.

Shit !  The snag just moved !!

Lyn had snagged this 4.5 metre Crock.

First an explosion of bubbles and then a great head rose to the surface.

As Lyn raced back to camp on the quad to tell the others, I waited and hoped it would be patient until all arrived to view the spectacle.

Now that all have seen, we pull hard on the line a actually retrieve the lure.

That crock just cruised the river mouth for the next hour whilst we continued to fish.

And fish we did.

These are the 9 we kept

The other 17 we released back, both big and small.

I am not a keen fisherman but this was exciting, and we do love eating Queen Fish.

Fish for a late breakfast and then head further south, exploring the coastline.

White sands and beautiful filtered drinking water.

Checking the sand firmness before crossing another no named creek.

Aboriginal Middens.

Red Cliffs

22 km’s south

The remains of an old unlisted shipwreck.

In the mangroves are old timbers and scattered bits of metal.

This is as far south as we go.

Ahead are the mangroves of Shelbourne Bay ( which we crossed back in 2003) and beyond is White Point that we visited earlier this trip.

The quads are turned around and we camp this time on the Northern side of Double Mouth.

Lyn has her lure working to perfection.

Now that’s a fillet o fish !

Camp 8, north of Double Mouth.

It is now a reasonably quick 2 day beach run back to Ussher.

BIG Crock live here !

John, Rob and Jan de-construct one of the many satellite beacons washed in from the long line fishing nets.

A bit of fun riding a big buoy.

Crocks and Croc prints

This one wider than the Quad !

At the end the quads look very ‘Hillbilly’ with all the junk we have collected.

A great trip.
