Part 41 Nova Scotia
Saturday, 19 May 2012 5:34 am
Between St Johns and Amherst we stayed on F’way No2 to cover some distance to Nova Scotia. From Amherst then cut north on the lesser No6 into the very country Northumberland area. This area is where the Scots first settled here in 1773.

Two lobsters at $10 each seemed good value. They were also selling Fiddleheads ???
(very young Bracken Fern buds)
1/2 Lb/400Gms for $3.00 so that will be our greens for tomorrow tonight.

Just across the road, an Australian girl, Tash came running across to say ‘hello’
She had been living here for 8 years and married to a local.
Swapped yarns and photographs of the vehicles outside her appropriately named Fish n Chip shop. - Tess’AUS-SOME Fish n Chips !

Now we need some wine to have with the Lobster and the freshly baked bread we also purchased. Fortunately Jost Wineries was just 15kms down the road.

Yep! they did have some nice wine and a great Port!
Does it look like we are tasting it professionally and not drinking it?
......... NO !
Found a great campsite just up the road, right on the water front overlooking Prince Edward Island.

Saturday 19th May:

Lobster, fresh baked bread, and local wine for dinner was perfect, as we watched the tide come in.
Crossed over the Canso Causeway on to Cape Breton, the northern part of Nova Scotia.
Not that we are avid patrons of MacDonalds other than their free WiFi and coffee, but a McLobster ! That is something we had to try.

In Port Hood drove down to the jetty and watched the Lobster boats unload their days catch. Chatted to the guys and they seem to do OK. This area has been harvesting lobster since the early 1900‘s.
All along the coast is an interesting mix of French and Gaelic speaking towns, remnants of past settlements.

Our next more tourist stop was into the Glenora Whisky Distillery, but the $7 tour I would not bother with if we had our choice again.
Looking for our nights camp we followed the dirt roads that hugged the coast. The scenery is getting better as we head north.
For dinner we tried those Fiddleheads (Young Bracken Fern Buds) and actually tasted quite good.

The grass is thick, rich and green beneath our feet - our cattle would love this!
The owner of the property came over and confirmed we could camp here for the night. His family has been living on this property for 300 years - 7 generations! WOW!

Sunday 20th May:
Now into the Cape Brenton National Park where the coast line is spectacular and rugged.

Pleasant Bay and this quaint gift shop.
Beside the road large groves of 350 year old Maple trees.

Another end of the road, this time beyond Red River and the Gampo Abbey, a Tibetan Monastery, the only one in North America, and beyond that a Stupa for World Peace.
It means more now having seen so many in Tibet.

Camp is as far north as any road will allow - to Meat Cove. Camp in down on the beach out of the cold wind on those exposed grassy points.

Monday 21st May:
Breakfast was on the beach watching the lobster boats retrieve their daily catch.
The coastline looks so relaxed, lapping waves, green grass, and blue sky...

Down at the docks at the Bay of St Laurence they were unloading their catch of Snow Crabs bound for the Boston Markets in the USA.
Summer is the time to work, for in winter it is harsh. ‘Only thing to do is skidoo’
Another great side road was via White Point, one of the many fishing ports along the coast

To get to the far point in the distance we followed a quad bike track only just wide enough for the vehicles.
It is something you just have to do to get to the end of the road !!

Was it worth it?
Yes
To see yet another lobster boat hall in yet more lobster from crystal blue waters.
