Part 40 Upper New York State - Vermont - New Hampshire - Maine

Wednesday, 16 May 2012 8:13 am

What a great camp site. A beautiful sunset over the St Laurence River, then this morning the ocean going ships fog horning their way up the river in a pea soup fog.

Went to pay for last night and the office closed, some workmen arrived and they had no key for the office. One of them said “I guess it must be free for international travellers” We did not argue.

Weather has gone overcast and raining, thus our drive over the Adirondack Mountains was unfortunately uninteresting.  Lake Placid, the home for the 1980 Olympics cold and damp.

The small town of Essex, established in 1765, was our ferry trip across the Richeleau River into Vermont. Most scenic places are closed so we missed Mt Philo and others.

Crossing the Lincoln Mountains we spy a radio repeater tower at the Appalachian Gap and that is Camp. Foggy and raining!

Wednesday 16th May:

Into Vermont and that is famous for Maple Syrup, so visited Goodrich’s Farm.

A family establishment that has been making syrup since 1800’s. The trees take 40 years before they can be tapped, and only produce for two months of the year. 20 gallons of sap produce 1 gallon of Maple Syrup.

This is the furnace that boils off the 90% water from the sap to produce the 4 grades of syrup.

Pancakes tomorrow for breakfast...for sure!

Tried to drive up to Mt Washington but the road still closed, so followed Highway No2 East through small towns.

At Skowhegan called the driving at an end for the day

Thursday 17th May:

On Highway 2 we continued west to the US/Canadian border at Calais/St Stephen. After a pleasant border crossing we are now in New Brunswick looking for a camp site.

Following advice from a local we headed down to the Green Point Lighthouse. A good, but windy camp however another couple were there building a campfire for the imminent arrival of 15 Girl Guides, so perhaps not. Following his advise we drive to Black Beach 55kms towards St Johns.
