Part 24: Into Alaska:Eagle, Chicken, Tok, Fairbanks.

Thursday, 1 September 2011 10:58 am

Monday 29th August

As we were about to cross the Yukon River at Dawson we offered 2 young ladies a lift to Chicken, about 80kms inside Alaska. Caroline and Nynke from France and the Netherlands are touring the world, finding work along the way.

Followed the ‘Top of The World H’way’ along the tops of mountain ranges, far above the tree line.

This is the USA/Canadian border post.

No problems here, all very easy.

Now we are officially in Alaska...and a picture to prove it!

Dropped the ladies in the town of Chicken and returned to the road north towards Eagle.

Camp was beside Alder Creek 30kms from the turnoff

Tuesday 30th August

Eagle was not as expected. The old town was washed away in 2009 when an ice dam broke and destroyed the old part of the town. Shame for the locals trying to etch a living from tourists that do the 120km drive north.

This must be a bird lovers house!

Eagle was once a stop over for the paddle wheelers prying their way up the Yukon River to the Klondike (Dawson)

Returning to Chicken, this was also an other gold mining town complete with dredge.

Now more of a tourist stop with three establishments looking for your dollars.

The most interesting, on the western end, is a collection of old shops, bar and cafe.

The saloon is well presented with hundreds of hats and memorabilia from the passing trade.

The thing for the ladies to do is fire their nickers through a small cannon loaded with gun powder. Then hang the remaining shrapnel on the wall...just could not get Lyn to part with her nickers !!

Well not in the bar anyway !

Camp was 30 Mile north on a ridge line.

Into Fairbanks today, but on the way we were side tracked to The North Pole, and guess what?

Father Christmas was there, with all the Christmas Tree trimmings  one could wish for.

He even autographed a book for all the grandchildren, just to prove he is REAL !

He gets 500,000 letters a year to this address so start writing now because he gets very busy later in the year.

Tomorrow a vehicle service & resupply for the Dawson H’way North.
